Cremation

In most cases, you may ask the animal clinic to hold your pet's body until you have made a decision. Most clinics are equipped to do this, and are more than happy to provide assistance with making final arrangements.

Cremation is an increasingly more common choice, and can be arranged through your vet clinic, or directly with any of the following agencies: Animal Memorial Services, The Calgary Humane Society, or Country Club Pet Memorial Park.(click here for contact information).

There are two types of cremation: private and general. In a private cremation, your pet is cremated separately, and the ashes are returned to you. If you wish to scatter the ashes (cremains) in your garden or other special place, you may do so. Some pet owners prefer to keep the cremains indefinitely. This is a personal choice and one that only you can make. The cost of a private cremation may vary according to your choice of urn, the weight of the animal and any special arrangements.

General cremation, or group cremation, is when your pet is cremated with others. In this case, the ashes can not be returned to you. As part of the Pet Loss Support Group's Life-to-Life program, all animal cremation facilities in Calgary now scatter the cremains of general cremations on farmers' fields or in special gardens. We feel this helps complete the full cycle of life and provides a dignified resting place for our beloved companion animals. The cost of a general cremation varies according to the weight of the animal.
